During a bagpack check, some of the teachers found bottles of nutmeg in a couple of students' bags.

A woman from Georgia, US, warned parents in a now-viral TikTok video about an unconventional way in which teens are getting high. According to the mother, teens are now sniffing nutmeg, New York Post reported.

The woman, who goes by the name Lakeview Living on TikTok, shared her findings after speaking with a teacher who reported the same issues at a school in the area. "Today, I was talking with one of my teacher friends and she was like, ‘Girl, trying to stay one step ahead of these kids is exhausting."

According to the woman, her friend told her something that was "flipping wild". During a bagpack check, some of the teachers found bottles of nutmeg in a couple of students' bags. Upon being questioned, the students said it was for a "culinary class".

However, when a fellow teacher confirmed the same from a culinary instructor, they said, "What are you talking about? We’re not making anything with nutmeg."

As per the report in New York Post, the school's resource officer overheard the conversation about the students having nutmeg in their bags. He later found the students, confiscated the kitchen staple and suspended them.

"You know why they’re all suspended? Because these flippin’ teenagers have figured out you can use nutmeg to get high," the woman said. "Y’all can’t get your homework done, but you can figure out how to get high off of nutmeg? Make it make sense."

As the woman's video gained traction on the social media platform, several users shared their piece of mind and even mentioned about nutmeg poisoning. "I took care of a kid years ago at the hospital for nutmeg intoxication. It was the first time I’d heard of it. Started in jails. But they have internet, so I’m sure that’s where they learned it," one user wrote.

Another user commented, "This has been a thing for years. There’s a substance in it that is psychoactive but not in a fun way. You get the worst hangover of your life for a 10 min high."

"How were they suspended if it’s it is not an illegal substance?" a third user questioned.

Now, according to the Encyclopedia of Toxicology, nutmeg, which is a common spice, is sometimes “abused for its narcotic and hallucinogenic properties." It is also hazardous and potentially fatal.  “One to three seeds or 5–30 grams of the ground nut are used to attain psychogenic effect,” the article quoted.

The initial symptoms of taking a large dose of nutmeg include giddiness, tingling, euphoria, and hallucinations. There are other side effects like “headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, chest pain, flushing, tremor, and tachycardia” as well.

As per New York Post, students have been sniffing nutmeg as part of a social media trend.
