Wall Street's three major indexes closed higher on Tuesday after shares in hotshot chipmaker Nvidia shook off early losses and investors looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's policy meeting conclusion on Wednesday for clues on interest rate policy.

Shares in Nvidia pulled out of the red to close up 1% after it revealed pricing and shipment plans for its hotly anticipated Blackwell B200 artificial intelligence chip, which it says could be 30 times faster than current chips.

Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles attributed Tuesday's overall gains to improving sentiment after Nvidia's shares turned around along with ongoing bullishness about the economy's direction.

"You're continuing to see money go into the market and not just technology," said James. "It certainly helps when you're seeing the large cap tech names today like Nvidia show relative strength from where they opened. But it's continuing the overall bullish theme that's been going on since the year started."

At 04:15 p.m. the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 320.33 points, or 0.83% , to 39,110.76, the S&amp;P 500 gained 29.09 points, or 0.56%, to 5,178.51 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 63.34 points, or 0.39%, to 16,166.79.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average outpaced its Wall Street peers, supported by a 2% gains in Home Depot and advances of more than 1% in both McDonald's and Apple Inc.

In the S&amp;P 500's 11 major industry sectors only communications services lost ground and that ended down just 0.2% after an almost 3% rally on Monday.

Energy led gains, rising 1.1% as oil prices rose.

Investors were preparing a day ahead of the Fed's policy update, including a press conference from Chair Jerome Powell. Robust inflation data has pulled back bets for the first rate cut in June to about 59% from about 69% at the start of last week, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

"There's optimism that the Fed's not going to surprise us a lot on Wednesday," said Gene Goldman, chief investment officer at Cetera Investment Management. "We think three cuts are still on the table."

But, Goldman still sees Powell reminding the market that he is cautious about inflation and that policy will depend on economic data and expects the central bank to update its inflation and economic growth projections.

Among other movers, crypto-exchange operator Coinbase Global fell almost 4% while miner Riot Platforms fell almost 3% along with a 5% slide in bitcoin.

MicroStrategy shares fell 5.7% after the company announced it had completed a $603.75 million convertible debt offering - its second in a week - to fund bitcoin purchases.

AI server maker Super Micro Computer shares tumbled just under 9% after it announced it will sell 2 million shares that could fetch about $2 billion.

Spire Global shares soared 30.4% after it announced a collaboration with Nvidia for AI-driven weather prediction.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.25-to-1 ratio on the NYSE, which showed 286 new highs and 53 new lows.

On the Nasdaq, 2,517 stocks rose and 1,768 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by about a 1.42-to-1 ratio and it recorded 98 new highs and 126 new lows. The S&amp;P 500 posted 49 new 52-week highs and one new low.

On U.S. exchanges 10.74 billion shares changed hands compared with the 12.37 billion average for the last 20 sessions.

Investors were torn between enthusiasm about the prospects for AI on the technology sector and worries ahead to the Federal Reserve's policy update on Wednesday, according to Lindsey Bell, chief strategist at 248 Ventures in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"This is a market that really wants to hold onto the momentum trade but what's really weighing on investors' minds is what happens with the Fed this week," said Bell.

"The market is sitting comfortably with the first cut coming in June or July but not entirely confident it'll be the case. The question is if it gets pushed out further."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average  rose 75.66 points, or 0.20% , to 38,790.43, the S&amp;P 500 gained 32.33 points, or 0.63%, to 5,149.42 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 130.27 points, or 0.82%, to 16,103.45.

The Nasdaq snapped three straight days of losses.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor index gave up gains to end the day virtually unchanged while the S&amp;P 500 technology index finished up 0.5%.

Of the S&amp;P's 11 major sectors the weakest were rate sensitive real estate  and healthcare with both off 0.02%.

Stronger-than-expected inflation figures have prompted traders to rethink when and by how much policymakers will lower rates this year, with traders pulling back the probability for a June rate cut  to around 51% from about 71% just a week ago, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

If the Fed were to take a hawkish tone when its policy meeting concludes on Wednesday, this could pressure stocks.

"The fact we're up today provides investors with an opportunity to take profits ahead of the Fed which is more likely to disappoint than to support the recent rally in risk assets," said Sameer Samana, Senior Global Market Strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute in Charlotte.

Goldman Sachs on Monday said they now expect three interest rate cuts in 2024, compared with four expected earlier, after inflation came in a bit firmer than expected.

"With the market near recent highs it's very difficult to see what could provide an upside spark from here. It's not hard to imagine the things that could cause disappointment," said Samana citing the Fed and high valuations for tech stocks.

Exchange operator Nasdaq said it resolved an issue related to connectivity and stock orders that had affected early trading for more than two hours on Monday.

U.S.-listed shares of Xpeng added 1.9% on its plans to launch a cheaper EV brand amid fierce price competition.

Boeing finished down 1.5% after a media report that a federal grand jury in Seattle issued a subpoena to the planemaker over the Jan. 5 midair blowout of a Boeing door plug on an Alaska Airlines flight.

Super Micro Computer, which joined the S&amp;P 500 on Monday, gave up earlier gains to close down 6.4%, making it the biggest percentage decliner on the day in the benchmark index.

However, the stock, which has rallied furiously recently on bets it would benefit from AI, is still up more than 252% for the year-to-date.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.17-to-1 ratio on the NYSE where there were 224 new highs and 58 new lows.

On the Nasdaq 1,905 stocks rose and 2,400 fell as declining issues outnumbered advancers by about a 1.26-to-1 ratio.

The S&amp;P 500 posted 41 new 52-week highs and one new low while the Nasdaq recorded 102 new highs and 131 new lows.

On U.S. exchanges 11.16 billion shares changed hands compared with the 12.41 billion average for the last 20 sessions.

An index of semiconductors was down 0.5% on Friday and registered its biggest weekly percentage decline since early January. The NvidiaGTC developer conference scheduled for March 18 to 21 will be watched closely for AI-related announcements.

"We seem in a period here where everyone knows rates eventually will be lowered. The expectation of when it happens keeps getting slightly pushed back, but investors still believe it will happen," said Rick Meckler, partner at Cherry Lane Investments in New Vernon, New Jersey.

"It's been a back-and-forth market as people reposition and consider whether some of the real winners have just gone a little bit too far, so you're seeing them trade off."

The week started with investors' options positions leaning toward call contracts - typically bought to express a bullish bias, said Brent Kochuba, founder of analytic service SpotGamma. However, the S&amp;P 500's failure to rise quickly eroded the value of upside call options, putting further downward pressure on the market, he noted.

While Wall Street's AI-driven rally has stalled, the S&amp;P 500 remains up 7.3% for the year to date.

Among data released on Friday, production at U.S. factories increased more than expected in February, but the January figure was revised sharply down as manufacturing remains hamstrung by higher interest rates.

Also, the University of Michigan's preliminary reading on the overall index of consumer sentiment came in at 76.5 this month, versus an estimated reading of 76.9.

U.S. stocks dropped on Thursday, with chipmaker stocks extending losses for a second day, and as a jump in producer prices left investors wondering if the Federal Reserve might wait longer than expected to cut interest rates.

Data showed U.S. producer prices increased more than expected in February as the cost of goods like gasoline and food surged.

Rate-sensitive utilities and real estate were the day's weakest sectors, with real estate down 1.6% and utilities off 0.8%.

The Fed is expected to leave rates unchanged at its policy meeting next week. The market has trimmed the odds of a cut of at least 25 basis points at its June meeting to 62.9%, CME's FedWatch Tool showed, down from 81.7% a week ago.

"If we take inflation as a whole, we've had relatively hot inflation readings the last two months now, yet the market has kind of powered higher," said Tony Welch, chief investment officer of SignatureFD.

"Fed policy may not be as loose as the market wanted it to be this year, but the prospect of further tightening still remains a low probability."

Nvidia shares fell 3.2%, while an index of semiconductors was down 1.8%. The index is down 3.5% for the week so far, with investors taking profits after recent sharp gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Averag fell 137.66 points, or 0.35%, to 38,905.66. The S&amp;P 500 lost 14.83 points, or 0.29%, at 5,150.48 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 49.24 points, or 0.3%, to 16,128.53.

The S&amp;P 500 remains up about 8% for the year to date.
The small cap Russell 2000 fell 2% on the day, underperforming the broader market.

"There's nervousness about the market being very extended with a relatively narrow breath. You can see the anxiety from the hotter PPI expressed in the Russell index of small and midcap names," said Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles.

Other data showed U.S. retail sales rebounded in February, rising 0.6%, but less than the 0.8% advance expected.

Shares of Robinhood Markets rose 5.2% after the trading app operator said its assets under custody rose 16% in February.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 13.1 billion shares, compared with the 12.1 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a 3.77-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 3.08-to-1 ratio favored decliners.

Nvidia shares fell 3.2%, while an index of semiconductors was down 1.8%. The index is down 3.5% for the week so far, with investors taking profits after recent sharp gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Averag fell 137.66 points, or 0.35%, to 38,905.66. The S&amp;amp;P 500 lost 14.83 points, or 0.29%, at 5,150.48 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 49.24 points, or 0.3%, to 16,128.53.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 remains up about 8% for the year to date.
The small cap Russell 2000 fell 2% on the day, underperforming the broader market.

&quot;There's nervousness about the market being very extended with a relatively narrow breath. You can see the anxiety from the hotter PPI expressed in the Russell index of small and midcap names,&quot; said Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles.

Other data showed U.S. retail sales rebounded in February, rising 0.6%, but less than the 0.8% advance expected.

Shares of Robinhood Markets rose 5.2% after the trading app operator said its assets under custody rose 16% in February.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 13.1 billion shares, compared with the 12.1 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a 3.77-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 3.08-to-1 ratio favored decliners.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 posted 39 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 57 new highs and 186 new lows.
